Chapter 9: Worship Matters

This chapter was very gospel based which was very refreshing to just come back to Gods word. It was very cool how the author tied in the gospel to leading worship in the way he did. He explained how "The gospel is not merely one of many possible themes we can touch on as we come to worship God. It is the central and foundational theme” (130).

I loved this chapter because it taught me how to take my everyday bible reading and Christian studies and incorporate them into leading worship. It reminded me of the song Heart Of Worship and how we must not just say its all about God, but we must sing Gods gospel which I thought was very powerful.

Chapter 7: Worship Matters

-Sorry this did not post when I read it. My account has been posting to Google Plus instead-

This chapter in Bob Kaughlins, Worship Matters, was about being faithful as a worship leader. When I first read the title I was thinking this must mean to stay strong with good stamina throughout performances. It did not mean that. It was referring to "faithful means fulfilling the desires of another. We don’t define our ministry; God does" (103).
The part that really stuck out to me in this chapter was the quote that says We don't define our ministry. As a leader I find myself often thinking of the people in band and how we each contribute to the worship set and band. I get so caught up in it that worship becomes about US and what WE are doing for the worship. When I should be remembering that it is about GOD. It isn't us that defines the quality of the music or the message it speaks. It is ALL GOD and that was very powerful to me.

Chapter 6: Worship Matters

-Sorry this did not post when I read it. My account has been posting to Google Plus instead-

Today I read chapter 6 of worship matters. It was about what a worship leader does and how it is not us that is the true worship leader. It is Jesus. This was very interesting as you always hear about how worship is ABOUT Jesus not us. But I have ever heard Jesus IS the worship leader.
This was really cool for me because as I have taken more of a leadership role in my schools worship band this year, it is such a heart warming and convicting remainder that it is God who is leading worship. Not us. We cannot lead worship by ourselves for the gifts of our music abilities come from God. He is leading worship through us. We are merely His instruments to project the sound of love to those we are singing with.

Worship Matters - Leadership

Recently my worship band has been reading the book Worship Matters. I am thoroughly enjoying this book because of the way this author goes about worship in so many perspectives. The first part of the book was about leadership. He spends a lot of time speaking about the skill and excellence of the leader, but he also reminds leaders that “the greatest challenge is what you yourself bring to the platform each and every Sunday: your heart” (21). That is why I enjoy is so much because at the end of the day he continues to remind us that we can be excellent leaders of worship and musicians but that doesn't even matter if your heart isn't there.

This hit me in a very good way. Being able to focus on the heart and not the head while leading worship has something I have been working on the most the past year. It was a great reminder that we can lead worship and have fun and really touch peoples heart with our songs but it is God that is doing that not us. If our hearts are not in it and present with God then we are leading worship correctly. As I continue to lead worship at church and school it is something I need to constantly pray about; that it is not about me or my talent, is it about bringing my heart to God so His love can overflow my heart into others through music.

Quality Worship Leader

A quality leader is someone who leads from the overflowing love in their heart that God has given them. A quality leader is not someone who sings to sound good or make their own name known. They are someone who sings to glorify God and make HIS name known. Yes music should sound good because if your music sounds bad no one is going to want to sing along and it distracts from the purpose. However it's making Gods name known and giving your all to Him that makes a quality leader.

I picked Max Monte from the band Minor. He leads worship at my church as well as travels with his band Minor to spread the love of Jesus. I picked him because of how he worships. You can see and hear the love in his heart through his voice. God has gifted him with a voice that pours love into the room. There is never a hand down or a mouth not singing when minor plays their music. Not only does he live out his faith in worship but in his everyday life. Max Monte is one of the most amazing christian artists I've heard (vocals wise) and you can feel Gods love in every note he sings.

Inside Out Worship

This book by Matt Redman is an insight for passionate and purposeful worship.
Two things  that really stood out to me were this:
1. "True worship always works itself from the inside out. A love for God that burns so much it can't Help but express itself on the outside too."
2. "Out of the outflow of the heart, the mouth speaks. When it comes to gathered worship D.C. left song we sing must be the overflow of a heart consumed by Gods love."

Guiding principles for worship

Worship is a dialogue
Song is not the only way to express worship through dialogue. Just talking to God or about God is another way to show praise. It gives examples from the Bible when in the temple they were so in need of God all they could do is cry out praise.
Worship is focused on Christ
When worshipping you should block out everything and just focus on God because that's what worship is about.

Worship is contemporary
Language has not stayed the same since the Bible was written so long ago. We must find a way to interpret it and make it into a song people will understand and connect to.

Worship is traditional
We must still hold into the hymns from the past because they are the music that got us to where we are and nourished the church into what it is today.

Worship is Wholistic
You cannot just stand in chapel and sing with your mouth. You cannot just pray with your head thinking of what to say. You cannot just go a show Gods love by feeding homeless. When you worship God you do it in everything do and when you do it, do it with all your mind heart and strength. If you're singing then sing out of your heart and mind loving a God. When you pray don't let it just be words, let it be a sincere words of thought from mind and heart.

Worship is participative
When you worship don't do it alone. Invite people to your church, when you're in chapel encourage people to sing along with you and the band. Church means community and community means coming together.

Worship is inclusive
When worshipping in the music sense you must think of the words in the song and how they can speak to all age groups and backgrounds. Not just the words but the melody and key. Are you picking a key so people can join in or is it a song so high they can't do anything but stand and listen to you sing?

Worship is balance
Worship should be a good balance of feeling near to God and just being able to praise his name and dance like no one is watching :)
