Recently my worship band has been reading the book Worship Matters. I am thoroughly enjoying this book because of the way this author goes about worship in so many perspectives. The first part of the book was about leadership. He spends a lot of time speaking about the skill and excellence of the leader, but he also reminds leaders that “the greatest challenge is what you yourself bring to the platform each and every Sunday: your heart” (21). That is why I enjoy is so much because at the end of the day he continues to remind us that we can be excellent leaders of worship and musicians but that doesn't even matter if your heart isn't there.
This hit me in a very good way. Being able to focus on the heart and not the head while leading worship has something I have been working on the most the past year. It was a great reminder that we can lead worship and have fun and really touch peoples heart with our songs but it is God that is doing that not us. If our hearts are not in it and present with God then we are leading worship correctly. As I continue to lead worship at church and school it is something I need to constantly pray about; that it is not about me or my talent, is it about bringing my heart to God so His love can overflow my heart into others through music.
